How much could fraud really be costing your business?
13 Jun 2025 · 2 min read
It’s easy to assume fraud is something only large corporations need to worry about—those with huge teams and dedicated security departments.
But that’s far from the truth.
Fraud is on the rise, and smaller businesses are just as much at risk—if not more. Without the same resources, training, or protective systems in place, they often find themselves more exposed.
A particularly worrying trend is identity fraud. That’s when someone pretends to be someone you trust—like a colleague, supplier, or customer—to gain access to funds, data, or your systems.
It could be an email that looks like it’s from your finance manager asking for a quick payment. Or someone using stolen login details to break into your business tools.
Most of the time, it starts with something simple: a stolen username and password. A basic trick, but one that still catches people out.
And with AI now being used to fake emails, voices, and even videos, spotting the difference between real and fake has never been harder.
In fact, nearly 7 in 10 businesses say they’ve noticed an increase in attempted fraud.
There is some good news, though.
Firms that have put better identity checks in place—things like facial recognition, trusted device detection, and smarter fraud monitoring—are seeing fewer incidents and saving money.
You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight. Even small changes can help. A good place to begin is by looking at how your team logs in:
- Are your passwords unique and randomly generated for every system?
- Do you have multi-factor authentication switched on?
- Have your staff had basic training to spot dodgy emails or suspicious requests?
Security doesn’t need to slow you down. The aim is to make it simple and strong enough to keep your business safe—without getting in the way.
