The scheme
What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is the UK government-backed scheme that shows your business has the basic protections in place against the most common cyber attacks.
It's required for many government contracts, and more and more businesses ask their suppliers for it. Cyber Essentials Plus covers the same ground, but adds a hands-on technical audit by an independent assessor.
The scheme checks five areas of your IT:

- Secure configuration
- User access control
- Malware protection
- Security update management
How we get you certified
Most businesses are ready in around three months, depending on how much needs to change.

Our Cyber Essentials tool checks your business against every area of the scheme and shows exactly what still needs work.
Step 2
Close the gaps
We fix what needs fixing — updates, device settings, accounts and access. For support-contract clients this is covered by your contract; otherwise it's charged separately.
Step 3
Know when you're ready
For Cyber Essentials, we'll tell you when you meet the requirements and are ready to certify.
Step 4
Independent certification
For Cyber Essentials Plus, we arrange an independent assessor to audit your systems and certify you.
Do you certify us yourselves?
No. We guide you through the scheme and get your systems ready. For Cyber Essentials, we'll tell you when you're ready to certify; for Cyber Essentials Plus, an independent assessor audits your systems and certifies you.
How long does it take?
Typically around three months from our first assessment to certification, depending on how much needs to change.
What does it cost?
It depends on how much work your systems need. If you have a support contract with us, fixing the gaps is covered by your contract; otherwise that work is charged separately.
What's the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?
Both cover the same five areas. Cyber Essentials is based on a self-assessment, while Cyber Essentials Plus adds a hands-on technical audit by an independent assessor — which gives your customers extra assurance.
Why do customers ask for it?
It shows you take security seriously. It's required for many government contracts, and larger businesses increasingly expect it from their suppliers.
Does it need renewing?
Yes — certification lasts 12 months, so it needs renewing each year. We can help you stay compliant in between.
